Baccarat 101 – Banker vs Player, Rules & House Edge
Baccarat looks mysterious but is one of the simplest casino games to play. Your main decision is which side to bet: Banker, Player or Tie. This guide explains rules, drawing, house edge and how to approach the game sensibly.
1. How Baccarat Works
Baccarat is typically dealt from a shoe with multiple decks (often 6 or 8). You don’t play as “Banker” or “Player” yourself – you just bet on which hand will finish closer to 9.
Card values
- Number cards 2–9 = face value
- 10, J, Q, K = 0
- Ace = 1
Only the last digit of the total matters. For example:
- 7 + 5 = 12 → counts as 2
- 9 + 7 = 16 → counts as 6
The goal
The winning hand is the one with a total closest to 9 after all drawing rules are applied. If both hands tie, Tie bets win, others push.
2. Banker, Player and Tie Bets
Baccarat’s core strategy is nearly all about which of the three main bets you choose.
| Bet Type | Typical Payout | Approx. House Edge* | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Banker | 1:1 (minus 5% commission in many casinos) | ~1.06% | Usually the best bet in standard baccarat. |
| Player | 1:1 | ~1.24% | Still a solid bet, slightly worse than Banker. |
| Tie | 8:1 or 9:1 (varies) | Often > 10% | Attractive payout, but usually very bad EV. |
*Exact edges vary slightly by number of decks and specific house rules, but Banker virtually always comes out ahead mathematically.
3. Why Banker Is Usually Best
The drawing rules favour the Banker hand slightly over the Player hand, which is why casinos typically charge a 5% commission on Banker wins.
- Banker draws based on more information (often after seeing Player’s third card).
- Even with commission, Banker’s edge is still a bit lower than Player’s.
- Over many hands, consistently backing Banker tends to lose less on average than backing Player or Tie.
You don’t need to get fancy with pattern-tracking or shoe “streaks”. The underlying math doesn’t care about hot or cold runs.
4. Side Bets & Variants
Many baccarat tables (especially online) offer side bets: Player/Banker pairs, big/small, perfect pairs and more. These usually come with significantly higher house edges.
- Side bets are designed to add excitement and extra volatility.
- Most have a much higher cost over time than simple Banker/Player bets.
- Use them sparingly (if at all) and treat them as pure entertainment.
5. Bankroll Planning for Baccarat
Baccarat is fast and simple, which makes it easy to run through a lot of hands. A little planning goes a long way.
Basic bankroll guidelines
- Decide how much you can afford to lose over a night or trip – your total bankroll.
- Split that into sessions (for example, 3–5 sessions per trip).
- Within each session, choose a unit size that gives you 50–100 bets.
- Set a stop-loss (for example, 20–30 units) and a realistic win goal (for example, 20–40 units).
The goal isn’t to beat the game long-term, but to keep the experience within limits you’re comfortable with.
6. Online & Live Dealer Baccarat
Online casinos usually offer baccarat in RNG (digital) form and increasingly in live-dealer streams.
- RNG baccarat: quick rounds, simple interface, often low minimum bets.
- Live dealer baccarat: streamed from studios, slower pace and more social, often with a range of table limits.
- Mobile play: convenient, but easy to play more hands than planned – keep an eye on time and total wagers.
As always, play only at licensed casinos with clear rules, transparent bet options and decent responsible gambling tools.
7. Keeping Baccarat in Perspective
Baccarat’s low decision load can make it feel almost meditative – or dangerously automatic. The key is to stay aware of time, money and how you feel.
- Treat every session as paid entertainment, not a way to make income.
- Don’t chase losses with bigger bets or “pattern” systems.
- Take breaks regularly; walk away when you hit your limits.
- Be honest with yourself if you’re hiding gambling or using it to escape stress.
