Three Card Poker 101 – Rules, Ante/Play Strategy & House Edge
Three Card Poker is fast, simple, and has one of the lowest house edges of any table game once you learn a single strategy rule. This guide covers the Ante/Play bet, the Pair Plus side bet, and why one of them is a much better deal than the other.

Unlike blackjack, you're not trying to beat other players — you're comparing your three-card hand against the dealer's, or betting on your own hand strength independent of the dealer.
The two main bets
- Ante: a wager that your three-card hand will beat the dealer's.
- Pair Plus: an optional side bet that pays based purely on your own hand (pair or better), regardless of the dealer.
You can bet Ante alone, Pair Plus alone, or both. To make a Play bet (see below) you must have an Ante bet down.
Hand rankings (unusual order)
Because you're only working with three cards, straights are rarer than three-of-a-kind. So the order flips from regular poker: Straight Flush > Three of a Kind > Straight > Flush > Pair > High Card.
2. The Q-6-4 Strategy Rule
Three Card Poker has one of the simplest "optimal strategies" of any table game — a single rule gets you extremely close to the best possible result.
The rule
Make the Play bet with Queen-6-4 or better. Fold anything weaker.
"Queen-6-4" means your highest card is a Queen or better, and if your highest card is exactly a Queen, your second-highest card needs to be a 6 or better (with a 4 or better as the third card in edge cases). In practice: fold weak, unpaired low hands; play everything else.
Following this rule consistently gets you the game's published house edge of about 3.37% on the Ante/Play bet (roughly 2.01% of your total action, once you account for the extra Play bet). Deviating from it — folding too often or playing too loose — costs you money over time.

Typical published house edges (with correct Q-6-4 strategy on Ante/Play):

4. Ante/Play vs. Pair Plus: Which Should You Bet?
If you're optimizing purely for the lowest cost per dollar wagered, Ante/Play is close to always the better core bet.
- Ante/Play has a lower, more stable house edge regardless of the casino's specific paytable.
- Pair Plus is highly paytable-dependent — great at some casinos, poor at others.
- Many strategy guides recommend Ante/Play as your primary bet and treating Pair Plus as optional, checking the paytable first.
5. Bankroll Planning for Three Card Poker
Three Card Poker moves quickly, similar to baccarat, so it's easy to play more hands than you intended.
- Decide your total session bankroll before sitting down.
- Pick a unit size that gives you 50–100+ Ante bets for the session.
- Set a stop-loss and a realistic win goal, and stick to both.
- If betting Pair Plus, budget it separately from your Ante bankroll.
6. Keeping It in Perspective
Three Card Poker's fast pace and big Pair Plus payouts (straight flushes, three of a kinds) can make chasing a big hit tempting. Stick to your plan.
- Treat every session as paid entertainment, not income.
- Don't increase Pair Plus bets to "get back" a losing session.
- Take breaks, and walk away at your limits.
