Each trial ended in a win, a "near-miss" (a losing combination visually close to a win), or a "full-miss" (a clearly losing combination). In some trials, participants had personal control over stopping the reels; in others, the outcome was automatic. Researchers compared brain activity and self-reported feelings across these outcome types.
