The Illusion of Control

The study that named a bias you've probably felt at a craps table without knowing it had a name.

Study Overview

Psychologist Ellen Langer ran a series of six experiments involving 631 adults to test a simple question: do people act more confident about pure-chance outcomes when the situation is dressed up to look like it involves skill? She defined the "illusion of control" as expecting a personal success probability that's inappropriately higher than the real, objective probability warrants.

Methodology Summary

Each of the six studies isolated a different "skill-like" element and dropped it into an otherwise pure-chance situation, then measured how it changed people's confidence or behavior:

  • Competition: participants cut cards against either a confident-acting or a nervous-acting opponent.
  • Choice: lottery participants either chose their own ticket or were assigned one.
  • Familiarity: lottery tickets used either familiar symbols or unfamiliar ones.
  • Practice and involvement: participants in a novel chance game either practiced first or didn't, and played themselves or through a proxy.
  • Time pressure: racetrack bettors were asked how confident they felt at different points before a race.
  • Ticket format: lottery participants received either one 3-digit ticket or three separate 1-digit tickets.

Key Findings

Across the six studies, adding elements normally associated with skill — competition, choice, familiarity, involvement — consistently made people act more confident about outcomes that were, mathematically, no more likely to go their way. For example, participants who chose their own lottery ticket valued it more highly and were more reluctant to trade it than participants who were simply handed one, even though both tickets had identical odds.

Limitations

  • The original studies used small, low-stakes contexts (lottery tickets, card games) — not real-money casino gambling, so the size of the effect in an actual casino wasn't directly measured here.
  • Participants were general adults, not necessarily people who gamble regularly, so results may not fully generalize to habitual gamblers.
  • Fifty years of replication since 1975 (see the meta-analytic review by Presson & Benassi, 1996) confirm the effect exists broadly, but its size varies a lot depending on context — it isn't a fixed, universal number.

Practical Meaning

This is the research basis for our Illusion of Control guide. The practical takeaway: any time a chance-based casino game lets you make a choice — picking your own numbers, choosing when to hit "spin," setting the dice a certain way — that choice can make the outcome feel more earned than it actually is, without changing your real odds at all.
